Crossing US 50, looking east
Title:  Crossing US 50, looking east
Description:  This view looks west towards St Louis, from the highway crossing of US 50 between Gerald and Union, MO. Compare this view with other photos. The track is still in place as of 2-05-2016 between here and Union, several miles to the east. But west of here, it's a much different story.

Close-up of end-of-track at US 50 grade crossing
Title:  Close-up of end-of-track at US 50 grade crossing
Description:  These rails were removed on or around Feb 5, 2016. Apparently the removal started here, and the salvage crews are working their way back towards Owensville, Belle, and eventually Eldon, MO. Of interest is the angle at which the rails were cut: they appear to be sliced at an angle, but I don't know why. This is the end of the line for the St Louis sub. It goes no further.

End of track at US 50 grade crossing
Title:  End of track at US 50 grade crossing
Description:  The rails were removed from here, at the crossing of US 50, beginning sometime around 2-05-2016. This view looks east, towards St Louis. Note the rails, how they were cut or sliced at an angle. The wooden planks for the crossing were still in place, but the rest of the crossing was paved over long ago.

Title:  Lengths of old rail
Description:  These pieces of rail were removed sometime around 2-05-2016, the date of this picture. Note how the rails are stacked more or less neatly near the crossties where they had been secured for many years. Final disposition is unknown.

Rail-less ties, looking west
Title:  Rail-less ties, looking west
Description:  Compare this view with other photos looking west at this location, just a few feet away from the crossing of US 50. As of 2-05-2016, the rails had been removed and were placed along the old right of way. The ties had been left in place. Plans are to make this the "Rock Island Trail", connecting Kansas City (Pleasant Hill) with at least to Beaufort. So where passengers once rode, pedestrians will walk, probably knowing little about the railroad that used to be here.

Signal/relay box at MO Highway 185 crossing
Title:  Signal/relay box at MO Highway 185 crossing
Description:  The information on the west (facing) side of this box is incorrect, as MO 185 isn't a US highway. Note the "bumper sticker" attesting ownership by Central Midland Railway. This box is on the north side of the tracks but probably hasn't been used in a long, long time.

Crossing Greenstreet, looking east
Title:  Crossing Greenstreet, looking east

Crossing Greenstreet, looking west
Title:  Crossing Greenstreet, looking west
Description:  The setting sun gives a backlit effect for the former Rock Island right of way, looking west from the crossing at Greenstreet near Beaufort, MO on 2-05-2016. That is a very sharp curve as the rails head west. The rails were still in place and visible as of 2-05-2016 but it's anybody's guess how long they'll remain.

Ex-RI ROW, looking east from west end of town
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, looking east from west end of town
Description:  This view looks east towards Gerald itself, from the last grade crossing site before the tracks left town. Note the MFA elevator in the distance, plus some of the buildings in the city of Gerald itself. At one time there was at least one passing siding and any number of industrial spur tracks. All of that is gone, as of 2-05-2016.

Title:  Surplus lengths of rail

Ex-RI ROW, looking west, at the west end of town
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, looking west, at the west end of town
Description:  Back in December 2015, I took a photo showing this curve leading west out of Gerald and towards Owensville, Eldon, and eventually Kansas City. Here on 2-05-2016, the rails are gone and even the tree which had begun to take root between the ties is gone. That western, setting sun provided nothing but glare for this photo, by the way.

Ex-RI ROW, looking west from midtown
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, looking west from midtown
Description:  This photo also looks west, this time from the next-to-last grade crossing in Gerald. The ties are still in place as of 2-05-2016, and the old rail has been removed and placed on the ground in groups of about four sections or pieces. The remains of another track or siding appear to the left (south) of this picture.

Ex-RI trackage, looking west
Title:  Ex-RI trackage, looking west
Description:  The curve in the north (right) rail makes me wonder if there had been a connection at one time with the rails in the foreground. Part of the left rail is missing, however, so this connection and its function remain mysterious to me. Gerald, MO: 2-05-2016.

Ex-RI ROW, Shotwell Rd, looking east
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, Shotwell Rd, looking east
Description:  Leslie, MO is a small community but it had at least two crossings with the Rock Island line. This view was from the crossing at Shotwell Road, looking east. The curve may be somewhat less sharp than it appears, due to using the telephoto or "zoom" feature of my digital camera. Note that the rails are still in place on 2-05-2016, but the right of way has been cleared. Compare this photo with others of the Leslie area taken a couple of years ago.

Station sign
Title:  Station sign
Description:  I've seen signs like this one at several places along the former St Louis sub. This one was located near the site of the old Rosebud depot, apparently, even after the depot was removed years ago. Hardly a trace of even a foundation remains at "Depot Avenue" in Rosebud. The tracks were a block north of US Highway 50, the main road through this part of Missouri. Date of photo: 2-07-2016, and the photo looks east. The sun was setting, hence this somewhat darker background.

Ex-RI ROW, looking east at fill making Idel Road
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, looking east at fill making Idel Road
Description:  I climbed down the dirt (slid, mostly) and you may see my footprints in the dirt. I don't know when this fill was placed, literally over the tracks. Idel Road is just east of the Rosebud, MO city limits. I took this photo on 2-07-2016 and it looks east even though you won't see much besides a wall of dirt where a road now exists. Note the piece of rail poking out through the bottom of this pile.

Ex-RI ROW, looking west from Idel Rd.
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, looking west from Idel Rd.
Description:  I was standing on the fill making Idel Road when I took this photo on 2-07-2016. This view looks west towards the town of Rosebud, some of whose buildings are visible in the background. A few bits of rail remain in the ground but most has been taken up and placed in batches off to the side (as in the batch of rail about in the photo's left center).

Removed rail from ex-RI ROW
Title:  Removed rail from ex-RI ROW
Description:  These lengths of rail have a "112" written on their tops. This may be a reference to how many pounds per yard each rail weighed. Supposedly there is information or codes to that effect on the rail itself but I didn't take the time to look at it. Rosebud, MO: 2-07-2016, near Idel Road, just east of town.

Ex-RI ROW, double track section
Title:  Ex-RI ROW, double track section
Description:  There are two sets of ties here, just east of Rosebud, MO, and the remains of the switch is just behind me as I walked on the roadbed on 2-07-2016. The rails have been taken up and placed in groups off to the side: one batch is visible at the lower left and another batch is just west, near the left center edge. Quite a bit of other hardware was left behind, like the tie plates and spikes.
