B&O 4559, actually Elk River Coal & Lumber Co #10
Title:  B&O 4559, actually Elk River Coal & Lumber Co #10
Description:  Former Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. 2-8-2 #10 was repainted and relettered as B&O 4559 and placed on display at Heritage Station in Huntington, WV. I took this photo while a downpour was drenching everything in sight in June 1992, exact date uncertain. This engine had been placed here back around 1977 and was literally on open display for many years. The lettering is not completely accurate for B&O's steam power, but it sure looks good to me.

B&O 4559 (Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. #10), engineer's items
Title:  B&O 4559 (Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. #10), engineer's items
Description:  I'm not exactly sure what this piece of equipment is or does but it's on the engineer's side of the cab. The throttle is partly visible at the top right and the reverse gear is to the right of this mystery item (brake stand?), as well. Huntington, WV: June, 1992.

B&O 4559 (Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. #10), fireman's cab window
Title:  B&O 4559 (Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. #10), fireman's cab window
Description:  This view shows the yellow trim around the side and rear windows for the fireman's side of this engine. Elk River Coal & Lumber Co. 2-8-2 #10 has been on display at Huntington, WV's Heritage Station since around 1977 and is still there as of July 2016, but repainted back into the original Elk River paint and number. This has been a fabulous way for people to admire the machinery of yesteryear that brought us up to today.

B&O passenger station, looking south
Title:  B&O passenger station, looking south
Description:  Trains from the former Ohio River RR and later B&O used this station for many years. Passenger traffic ended during the 1950's and this station was eventually closed in 1965 after the C&O takeover. Tracks extended from here on to Kenova, WV but those were removed around 1965 as well. At the very least this old structure was still standing in June 1992 and it's still extant as of July 2016.

C&O 1308, engineer's side view
Title:  C&O 1308, engineer's side view
Description:  C&O 1308 has been on display at a park in Huntington, WV for about as long as i can remember. Still in relatively good condition considering being left outdoors for over 50 years, the engine is a reminder of C&O's presence in Huntington and many other places as well. Note the donated B&O CPL (color-position signal), salvaged, perhaps, from the abandonment of the B&O's ex-Ohio River Railroad line from Huntington to Kenova, WV around 1965. It was raining on this day in June 1992 (I don't remember which day), so I got out of Dad's car, grabbed the photos, and left!

C&O 1308, cab and tender view
Title:  C&O 1308, cab and tender view
Description:  Note the slanted cab on C&O's 1308, built by Baldwin in 1949 and on display at a park in Huntington, WV for many years (over 50!) This view shows the cab, the tender, and the stairway used at the time for tours of the cab. I don't recall the exact day in June 1992 but at least getting this photo was worth standing in the rain that day!

NS 1607, engineer's side view
Title:  NS 1607, engineer's side view
Description:  NS 1607, a high-hood SD40, was engaged in some local or yard work on a humid June day in 1992. The engine is shoving a number of cars into the former N&W yard at Kenova, WV, just east of Catlettsburg, KY and a few miles west of Huntington, WV. Note the lush foliage, so typical of western West Virginia (well, the whole state for that matter!).

NS 1607, long hood forward
Title:  NS 1607, long hood forward
Description:  This photo was taken just a moment after the first one. NS 1607 continues to shove a string of cars into the former N&W yard at Kenova, WV on a June day in 1992. Exact date uncertain. People did and still do cross the tracks in order to get from one part of Kenova to another. Interstate 64 is barely visible at the top right corner.

N&W caboose 518451, side view
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, side view
Description:  Former N&W caboose 518451 found new life near Fuller's, near Proctorville, Ohio. I don't know when the caboose was placed there, but these photos date from June 1992 (exact date uncertain). That's my then-10 year old son standing by the side.

N&W caboose 518451, angled view
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, angled view
Description:  This view of ex-N&W caboose 518451 gives kind of a "wedge" or 3/4 view of the side and end. Note the car number, still in place and centered between the cupola windows. Class C-3 designation is painted on the body near the handrail. Caboose was painted a very bright red ("fire engine red (?)", as some call it) with white lettering and yellow handrails. Date of photo is June 1992 but exact date is uncertain.

N&W caboose 518451, looking south
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, looking south
Description:  This view was taken from the other end of N&W caboose 518451 and shows one intact window, two boarded over windows, rivets at lower edge of cupola where it joins the body of the car, and sticker or memo to "home shop for repair - do not load". The two side windows in the cupola still have screens as of June 1992 (exact date uncertain).

N&W caboose 518451, end view 1
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, end view 1
Description:  This view is of the single-window end of N&W caboose 518451, located near Proctorville, Ohio, in June 1992. Exact date uncertain. This view shows the coupler, end of frame, door, handrails, brake wheel, steps, and related items. Sharper eyes than mine can translate the white messages near the air hose. Note also the small pieces of metal, apparently welded to the rails to keep the car in place.

N&W caboose 518451, end view 2
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, end view 2
Description:  Here is another end view of N&W caboose 518451, at Proctorville, OH in June 1992 (exact date uncertain). This view shows the "foliage" side, away from the "clean" side (I'm not sure exactly how to phrase this). The "C-3" class designation is visible at the lower right corner, and just to the left is the U-1 wheel stencil and COTS or similar information panels.

N&W caboose 518451, end view 3
Title:  N&W caboose 518451, end view 3
Description:  This final view of N&W caboose 518451, at Proctorville, OH, during June 1992 shows the other side of the carbody, with the handrails, door, and end window. The side windows in the cupola still have screens but I could never tell about the three side windows on this side. This caboose was still in place as of July 2016.
